The virtual reality technology has been piloted in the British Virgin Islands ahead of planned wider rollouts
Avantis Education, creator of the world’s leading virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) solution designed exclusively for education, has launched a new ClassVR pilot in the Caribbean. The 12-week initiative, taking place in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), marks the start of a programme that aims to transform classroom learning through immersive technology.
The pilot is being delivered in partnership with the Government of the British Virgin Islands and Unite BVI, an education-focused non-profit supporting national learning initiatives.
Throughout the 12-week pilot, Avantis is providing structured teacher onboarding and ongoing support. Training begins with online sessions and in-person training, and continues with regular virtual check-ins.
As part of the pilot’s launch visit to the British Virgin Islands, Avantis hosted a full-day workshop for 32 teachers from 10 primary and SEND schools, focused on effective classroom integration of VR, supported by hands-on sessions. Avantis also met with the Ministry of Education’s technical teams to establish long-term support for schools and visited Cedar International School to discuss implementation strategies.
Teachers participating in the pilot will receive structured onboarding and ongoing support throughout the 12 weeks, including online training and regular virtual check-ins. Students will use ClassVR headsets preloaded with Avantis’ extensive global K–12 curriculum library, enabling them to explore immersive learning environments that help deepen understanding and spark curiosity.
Student and teacher feedback will be collected to measure engagement, motivation, and early indicators of learning progress. These findings will inform plans for a wider national rollout planned for Spring 2026.
“We’re incredibly proud to be working alongside education leaders in the British Virgin Islands,” said Huw Williams, CEO of Avantis Education. “This pilot is about more than just technology – it's about reimagining what learning can look like. By immersing students in interactive, curriculum-aligned experiences, ClassVR helps to ignite curiosity and deepen understanding in a way that traditional methods can’t.”
Avantis’ approach builds on the success of previous large-scale implementations, such as the El Salvador VR education project, where independent studies reported significant increases in student attendance, motivation, and knowledge retention following the introduction of ClassVR.
The pilot also coincides with the recent global launch of Avantis’ next-generation headsets, Xcelerate and Xplorer. Xcelerate is the first ClassVR headset made specifically for high school and further education, delivering six-degrees-of-freedom head and controller tracking plus an innovative 90° flip visor that supports seamless transitions between immersive learning and real-world collaboration. Meanwhile, Xplorer delivers a next-gen headset for K-12. Developed in direct response to demand for more advanced and sophisticated VR/AR experiences, Xplorer is built to deliver richer learning with a new 4K Ultra-HD display, upgraded LCD screen, and enhanced audio.
“We’ve seen how powerful VR can be in driving engagement and improving outcomes,” added Williams. “Through this Caribbean pilot, we’re taking another step toward making immersive learning accessible to every student, everywhere.”
